Immigration Restriction Act

1945

Upon Federation, the Australian Government introduced the Immigration Restriction Act, which would go on to be known as the White Australia Policy. Including a 'dictation test', its aim was to stop non-white people from migrating.

On July 13, 1945, the Department of Immigration
was formally established, with Arthur Calwell
serving as its first minister.

Assisted Passages Scheme

1945

The Assisted Passages Scheme was introduced in 1945, in response to the labour shortages caused by World War 2. It granted migrants subsidised travel expenses in return for a two-year work commitment upon arrival.

End of the White Australia Policy

The abolishment of the White Australia Policy in 1973 signified Australia's commitment to becoming an equal, fair nation. It sparked the beginning of multiculturalism in Australia, as we know it today.

Racial Discrimination Act

1975

Enacted on the 11th of June 1975, the Racial Discrimination Act made racial discrimination illegal in Australia,
making the nation a more welcoming home for
those of diverse backgrounds.
